A Wing and a Prayer

Oil on canvas, 76 x 76 cm

“One of the things I miss most about Tanzania is waking up to the sounds of birds chirping every morning.”

A Wing and a Prayer is set against a bright red background, where Katherine’s African Grey Parrot soars above one of her favourite flowers, hibiscus, bringing back memories of home. Wings outstretched in flight, the bird and its environment are painted in contrasting harmony, portraying their strong and simultaneously delicate nature.

Wild populations of African Grey Parrots have been greatly reduced due to the pet trade and the destruction and fragmentation of their habitat. It is estimated that the populations have decreased by over 50% in many areas. In Ghana, where Grey Parrots were once common and widespread, since 1990, populations have declined between 90 and 99%.
