Eye of the Beholder
Oil on canvas, 76 x 101 cm
In Eye of the Beholder, the Secretary Bird’s eye captures the viewers’ gaze, with its vibrant feather plumes fanning outwards in dynamic motion. Katherine finds striking beauty and even joy in a species that is often overlooked.
Human encroachment on secretary birds’ natural habitat has led the species to fall into decline. With its grassland habitat burned and cleared for livestock, open areas leave little protection for prey animals, making it hard for Secretary Birds to find food. The results of localised surveys suggest that the total population is experiencing a rapid decline as a result of habitat degradation, and thus, the species has been classed as Endangered.
